Early Life and Military Career

Prabowo Subianto was born on October 17, 1951, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He is the son of Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, a prominent Indonesian economist and politician. Prabowo attended the prestigious Indonesian Military Academy, graduating in 1974. He subsequently served in the Indonesian Army's Special Forces (Kopassus), where he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a general.

Political Career

Prabowo entered politics in 1998, when he was appointed as the head of the Indonesian Armed Forces' Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS). He resigned from this position in 1999 and ran for president in the 2004 Indonesian presidential election. However, he was defeated by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Prabowo ran for president again in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, but he was again defeated by Joko Widodo.

Controversies

Prabowo's political career has been marked by controversy. He has been accused of human rights abuses during his time in the military, and he has also been linked to the 1998 riots in Indonesia. In 2008, he was declared ineligible to run for president by the Indonesian Constitutional Court due to his alleged involvement in the riots. However, the court overturned this decision in 2013, allowing him to run for president in 2014.

Current Activities

Prabowo is currently the chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). He is also the Minister of Defense in the Indonesian government, a position he has held since 2019.
