Spence and Johnson Rescue Tottenham Late to Deny Coventry in Carabao Cup

Tottenham Hotspur progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Giovani Lo Celso had given Spurs the lead early in the first half but Coventry hit back to level through Viktor Gyokeres just after the hour mark. However, a stunning long-range strike from Djed Spence and a late header from Cameron Carter-Vickers sent the hosts through to the next round.

Tottenham made nine changes to the team that started Sunday's Premier League win over Burnley, with Lo Celso, Spence, and Carter-Vickers among those coming into the side.

The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute when Lo Celso fired home from close range after a good run and cross from Matt Doherty.

Coventry, who had knocked out Championship rivals Bristol City in the previous round, grew into the game and created a number of chances.

They were rewarded for their efforts in the 64th minute when Gyokeres tapped in from close range after Jamie Allen had flicked on a corner.

However, Tottenham regained the lead in spectacular fashion just three minutes later when Spence unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the top corner of the net.

Carter-Vickers then made sure of the victory in the 84th minute when he headed home from a corner.

The win sees Tottenham progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they will face either Burnley or Rochdale.

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo was pleased with his team's performance, particularly in the second half.

Coventry manager Mark Robins was disappointed with the result but proud of his team's performance.

"I'm disappointed with the result but I'm proud of the players," he said. "We played well against a very good team and we created some good chances."
