Dallas Wings Set New Scoring Record; Suffer Sixth-Straight Loss Against New York Liberty
Wings Shatter Franchise Scoring Record in Loss
The Dallas Wings set a new franchise record for points in a game on Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough to avoid a sixth-straight loss. The Wings fell to the New York Liberty 123-118 in overtime at College Park Center despite a record-setting performance from All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale. Ogunbowale poured in a career-high 43 points, including 11 three-pointers, to lead the Wings. Dallas also got a strong performance from center Teaira McCowan who finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Liberty Win Despite Big Night from Ogunbowale
Despite Ogunbowale's heroics, the Wings couldn't overcome a slow start and a tough shooting night from the rest of the team. Dallas shot just 40.2% from the field and 29.4% from three-point range, compared to 48.1% and 37.0% for the Liberty. The Liberty took advantage of the Wings' cold shooting, building a 10-point halftime lead. New York made 20 three-pointers in the game, including seven from guard Sami Whitcomb who finished with 25 points.
Wings Can't Keep Up with Liberty Offensive Outburst
The Wings made a run in the third quarter, cutting the Liberty's lead to just two points, but New York answered back with a run of their own. The Liberty led by seven points entering the fourth quarter and held on for the win despite a late surge from the Wings. Betnijah Laney led the Liberty with 27 points, followed by Whitcomb and Natasha Howard who added 20 points each.
What's Next for the Wings?
The Wings will look to snap their losing streak when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Sparks on Thursday night. The Sparks are coming off a tough loss to the Seattle Storm but will be looking to bounce back against the Wings. Dallas will need to play better defensively and find a way to get more consistency from their role players if they want to avoid a seventh-straight loss.
